Pub Walks

If a cold pint or the prospect of a cosy fire motivates you to get out and walk, check out these four fabulous routes that finish with a warm welcome at one of our fine hostelries.

Tweed Valley Railway Path to Innerleithen

Starting from Walkerburn to the east or Peebles or Glentress to the west, a gentle stroll along the multi-use railway path to Innerleithen will reward with an intimate view of the River Tweed, alive with birds and other wildlife all year round. A stone’s throw from the railway path and the town’s busy High Street lies Durty Brewing – a life-affirming tap room – with the equally refreshing Traquair Arms Hotel next door.

Neidpath Castle Circuit to Peebles

Following the River Tweed upstream from Peebles, this much-loved route heads through Hay Lodge Park and beneath the imposing Neidpath Castle. At Manor Bridge, the shorter route returns via a spectacular view point above the ‘Sware’ – with a longer route following the old railway line to Lyne Station and on to Barns Tower. Once back in Peebles, the traditional Neidpath Inn is on hand with a cosy fire or wonderful sun garden, depending on the season.

John Buchan Way to Peebles

Take the bus to Broughton and enjoy the linear John Buchan Way back to Peebles on foot. A strenuous hill walk, this classic route passes through the Upper Tweed, inspiration for many of John Buchan’s novels. Just around the corner from Bank House – home of Anna Buchan, John’s sister who wrote under the pseudonym O. Douglas – the Crown Hotel on Peebles High Street is a lovely, family-run pub stocked with local beers and fine, seasonal food.

Eddleston Water Path to Eddleston

Connecting Peebles to the conservation village of Eddleston, the multi-use path that follows the remarkable Eddleston Water upriver is rich in both natural and cultural treasures. Learn all about the river’s global recognition as a UNESCO Ecohydrology Demonstration Site and much more thanks to vibrant signage along the path. Once in the village, the Horseshoe Inn is ideally placed to offer hearty food and drinks – and a welcome sit down.
