Discover Kailzie
Nestled between Peebles and Cardrona in an idyllic riverside setting, Kailzie Gardens offers year-round colour and interest.
Generations of plantings adorn beautiful Kailzie Gardens on the banks of the River Tweed. The expansive estate features a walled garden, characterful old greenhouses and delightful burnside walks, not to mention a wonderful array of wildlife.
The surrounding wild woodland garden has one of the best laid arboretums in Scotland, with one of many specimen trees, a larch planted in 1725, considered by some arboriculturists to be the oldest in the country.
The gardens play host to Kailzie’s famous snowdrops displays in February and March followed by seasonal displays of bluebells, daffodils and then a riot of colour in May and June from the azaleas delicately interspersed with a collection of blue poppies – the meconopsis.
Aside from the gardens, the estate is also home to a family-friendly fishery with well-stock trout pond – plus a private two-mile stretch of river for those wanting to test their fly fishing skills. If that isn’t enough to keep every visitor busy for the day, there’s also petanque and an 18-hole putting green in the grounds!
Perhaps the biggest transformation to have taken place at Kailzie in recent years has been at the accommodation end of the estate. The former Kailzie bunkhouse on the edge of Cardrona Forest underwent a facelift in early 2022, emerging in time for the mountain bike Enduro World Series that summer with a completely new identity and name: Kailzie Big Lodge.
The stylish bunkhouse featuring high speed internet, modern fitted kitchen and first-class security is already a favourite with elite cycling teams, trail running groups and international school parties.
And the lovely Kailzie Courtyard Café, with it’s seasonal menu and international influences should be on every visitor’s must-visit list. You can read all about about Head Chef, John Duncan’s, mouthwatering vision for the cafe over on our Stories – and book your table for the next special family meal or social lunch.
