Supper Time

It’s easy to fall into hibernation habits at this time of year. Which is why something special is called for to entice us out for the evening! From light bites to five-course luxury, here’s a selection of irresistible suppers all perfect for this cosiest of seasons.

Milne and Pickles burst onto the foodie scene in Peebles less than two years ago – and made its mark faster than most. This intimate café-cum-deli in the town’s Northgate quickly attracted a loyal coffee and cake following, but it’s the artisan cheese and charcuterie platters, paired with small producer wines and craft beers, that set it apart from other eateries in the valley. The atmosphere is warm and inviting; the produce selection second to none. Best of all, it’s open until 9pm on Fridays so you can start your weekend on a high. Gather your friends and family for a touch of fine wine, delectable food and unrivalled merriment!

If weekend treats are your thing, there’s something else a little special on offer not that far away. TRYST at The Park Hotel showcases the best of seasonal, Scottish fayre in a five-course dining menu prepared by Head Chef, Ryan Hogg. The regularly changing menu is built around the local larder, but also reflects Ryan’s passion for both Asian and Scandinavian flavours. Think langoustines and lamb, autumnal veggies and locally foraged produce – all woven together with a touch of fine dining class. The TRYST experience is available on Friday and Saturdays and look out for a five-course vegetarian option too.

There’s something to be said for eating out early at this time of year. Whether you’ve had a day exploring the hills or a whirlwind tour of the local attractions, a light supper before you head home (or back to your room) is often all that’s needed. Luckily, the talented team behind Osso are on the same page. Between 5-9pm, you can enjoy a selection of tapas-style dishes from their intriguing sharing menu, with warming favourites including parmesan custard, cheese doughnuts with jalapeno salsa, Thai-spiced chicken thighs and aubergine dopiaza all hitting the mark on a chilly evening. Osso’s proximity to the Eastgate Theatre also makes it an ideal spot for a pre-theatre dinner; drop in between 5-6pm to enjoy three plates for £15 (although we can’t promise you’ll want to stop at just three …).

An explosion of flavour and colour at The Park Hotel’s, TRYST

With Halloween fast approaching, the Tontine Hotel has curated a spectacular dinner menu to celebrate the spooky festivities. Its family-friendly, four-course menu is laced with autumnal flavours and colour – woodland mushrooms and autumn squash, Borders game and fire-roasted peppers – all fabulously themed around the spirit of the season (the Ghostly Sorbet and Ghoulish Gnocchi sound scarily good!). If the thought of staying in on Halloween gives you the heebie-jeebies, this is the only excuse you need to head out into the night. Booking essential – 31 October only.

And finally, a warm welcome and a hearty supper await just a stone’s throw from Peebles at the Macdonald Cardrona Hotel. This four-star hotel has made its name as a golf and spa resort, but it also boasts a popular restaurant with panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. There’s less of the Tweed Valley to admire on a dark evening – but still plenty to inspire you from Scotland on the plate. Macsween haggis bon bons and salt and pepper squid help to set the scene, with monkfish scampi, Scottish sirloins and wild mushroom and truffle pappardelle offering much needed fuel at the end of a busy day. Keep an eye on the hotel’s website for seasonal offers on stays throughout autumn/winter.
