tweed valley tales - Nature, History and Stories

A free storytelling audio trail on the GeoTourist app features 20 sites that give a flavour of the area’s rich cultural, natural, built and social history – with a few surprises too!

Our new digital trail has been developed in partnership with our friends at Destination Tweed and is part of a Scotland-wide research project run by the University of Dundee and app developer GeoTourist.

Tweed Valley Tales: Nature, History and Stories highlights points of interest across the valley from Dawyck to Walkerburn and aims to discover how technology can help visitors and locals experience destinations in a more immersive way.

Using the app, you can self-guide around the Tweed Valley with many of the sites accessible on foot and by bike using the valley’s extensive network of off-road, multi-use paths. The trail can also be discovered virtually from a different location.

Included within the tour are an eerie walk through a 600m-long disused railway tunnel at Neidpath, the carving of a First Nations figure by champion chainsaw carver Peter Bowsher at Dawyck Botanic Garden, and Cross Kirk, Peebles where it is said that a cross and relics of St Nicholas were discovered. As well as being the patron saint of sailors, St Nicholas was also the origin of the story of Santa Claus!

The Great Polish Map of Scotland, Robert Smail’s Printing Works and the Glentress meteorite sculpture with its inscription in Klingon – a nod to its maker’s love of Star Trek - also feature as part of the trail.

We would love for locals and visitors alike to use the multi-media app as they explore the area with family and friends this season. Check it out here: Tweed Valley Tales - Nature, History and Stories
